Could you possibly direct me to how to instructions... this is of great interest to me.

I would write a book to explain everything to you. The key elements are:
NFS (network file system)
MPI (Message Passing Interface)
It's been a while after I used it, and now I used better one that I purchased from Dell. You could find a book from Amazon for "How to build your own cluster".
